About Me & My First Post

About Me

My name is Colleen Wickersheim. I grew up a California girl and now live in Kansas, where my husband is from. Here's a little of my background:
From a young age, I knew I wanted to work with kids! I was also very creative and in High School, I attended a Visual Arts Academy within Pasadena High School. My first jobs were babysitting for different families, starting at age 13! Later on, I got a job at Pasadena Christian school working with children k-8th, heading up arts and cooking projects. I received my BA in Child Development from Cal State LA. Over the last 10 years I have been a Nanny for many different families and LOVE every minute of it! I have been married to Jason for 9 years and we have a son Brenden (6) and a daughter Keaten (3) and an American Bulldog which just adds to the fun of life sprinkled with GLITTER! (Written in 2011)

Here I am! (Written October 2011)

Ok Everyone!!! I'm doing this! I'm starting a BLOG!!! I'm very excited cause I have so many ideas inside that I want to share with the world! Just let me warn you that I am NOT a writer so please excuse any mistakes in that area. I love being creative with kids and with cooking! I love to find new ways of making kid friendly recipes HEALTHY!!! I have years of experience with trying to cook as natural as possible. A little background: My mother in law has a tumor around and also in her pituitary gland which was costing her 5,000 dollars A MONTH in medication. She started eating mostly organic and local, nothing from a box or can (even if organic) and now takes NO MEDS at all!!!!! There is so much to learn when it comes to health and cooking! I know I will still be learning until I cook my last meal! We can learn together through experience!
But don't think i'm only going to blog about VEGETABLES!!! =) I want to shower you with ideas to do with the little people in your life! Let's get excited! Life is meant to be lived and it doesn't always have to cost so much!

Here are a few pictures so you can get to know me a little. This is an older picture of my family, which is one of my FAVORITES!!! My husband, the dog, and I still look the same! =) My husband, Jason, inspires me so much! He is a very creative person! He is the Senior 3D Motion Graphic artist for a local company in Kansas City called Two West. It amazes me how he can sit for hours and figure something out without giving up or even getting that frustrated! He can also paint and play almost ANY instrument you can think of and if it couldn't get any better, he can fix ANYTHING around the house. His last job was a total Bathroom renovation!
This is my ALMOST 6 year old Kindergartner, Brenden. If he's not in a costume, he is in a tank top showing off his muscles to everyone! He is currently taking Gymnastics in a class with first and second grade boys. He loves doing handstands and is always trying to beat his last time! So far I think he's gotten 8 seconds! =) He told me he was born to dance and keeps begging me to get him Break Dance lessons... Which I have yet to find in Kansas! =)
This is my KISSABLE Keaten or as we call her Kiki! She is about to be 3 years old in a few weeks! She brings so much joy to all of our lives. She's always making us laugh. She is very into the alphabet right now, maybe because brother is now going to school everyday and she wants to go also. Anytime you see her around she will probably be carrying Pillowcase! These are from the Calvin Klein sheet set we got for our wedding. I looked into getting more since she was dragging them everywhere, $79.99 for a set of TWO!!! She better not loose the ones she has! LOL!

  1. In the Jello Blog you mentioned about the Red food coloring. I am new to all the HEALTH and Organic eating but want to learn so much more. Can you send me the link regarding the Red food coloring you were referring too? I am ready to get my family in the right direction of eating better after finding your blog I feel a little bit better about it. THANK YOU!

  2. slreynolds78, I am so happy you are asking this question! There are many articles on the web about food coloring being banned in the UK... you can just search it! Their studies found that it is linked to ADHD and Hyperactivity! You know how everyone always says sugar makes kids hyper.... It doesn't! More likely it's the food coloring!

In other cases food coloring causes skin conditions such as eczema and triggers asthma episodes.

Also, when tested on rats and mice in a study it was a cancer causing chemical!!!! Of course, the food and chemical industries are fighting any of these findings but not really something you want to mess with when feeding your children! so that is why I just stay away for it!

I hope this helps a little..There are MANY more things to read on the topic!
I just chose a few off hand when searching!
Its a hard job to try and feed our families right!
Just take it one step at a time and as a rule, when reading the ingredient label, don't buy it if you can read or understand what is all put into it!

  3. *Sorry, don't buy it if you CAN"T read or understand all of the ingredients!!!!

Hello, I was the girl you saw at the park today. I asked the question of where you bought your bow and arrow. Well, I decided to take a look at your blog. It is a really cool website. I love doing crafts and cooking. I will probably try some of the crafts you have post on here. They all look very cool. You seem like a gifted crafter and cook. Well, it was really nice to find a blog like this. Thank You for Future inspiration.

    1. I am so happy that I got to give you my blog address! I love to help inspire anyone with fun ideas of cooking and crafts! Thanks for checking me out! I also JUST posted how we made the Bow and Arrow! Let me know if you end up making one!

Hi! Same girl from the park, almost 3 years later. Remembered about your blog today, and fortunately remembered the address. I still remember that time I saw you at the park with the bow and arrow. Haha great memories. I never did end up making it,I really would like to make it a summer project though, as well as the gymnastics mushroom! I was so excited when I came across your site again today, and I hope (and probably) will never forget it, or the address.Hopefully you'll see this, and possibly write back!! That would be so cool!! Well, hopefully hear from you soon, (and glad to know you're still blogging) :)

I try to keep it going as much as I can! Right now I think I have three post waiting for me to finish up! It's a lot harder to blog with 4 little kids! hehe
Anyways, I'm glad you also like the mushroom idea! My son has gotten so good because of it! With lots of practice he has now gotten around SIX times!!! SO COOL!

Hi! You don't know me, but I think your blog is awesome! I am a 11 year old in a tiny town called Coral Springs, Florida. (pop. 126,604). Every year my church has a "trunk-or-treat". you wear your costumes to church, then after the service, you walk around the parking lot and get candy from open decorated trunks. I am an only child, so this year, my family and possibly another family will get together and make a *drumroll*... Avengers trunk! There are way more girls than boys, so I am going to be Hawkeye. Your son's costume is what I will use to make mine! Except the bow. I am buying the bow. I am a self-proclaimed nerd and I have a blog with a few friends. Not much there yet, but I'll be writing more soon. The web address is http://anniesudler1.doodlekit.com/ . You are a huge insparation to my June Halloween project. I like starting early. ;)

    God bless,
    A fangirl

    1. Hi! I am so happy you found my post helpful in making your Hawkeye costume! I had so much fun at the time trying to make my sons dream come true by looking just like Hawkeye. I am so happy all of my hard work not only benefited him but now others! Also, thanks for sharing the link, I will check out your blog! ;)

    Hi Colleen,
Is there anyway to contact you privately? I'm 4 months pregnant and need cataract surgery and - as you know! - there's not a lot of info out there about the surgery during pregnancy. I'm having a lot of trouble finding a surgeon who will do it... or getting any kind of answers about the risks. I could really just use some info or support.. or I don't know... something! This whole situation is so frustrating and awful. I even considered flying out to Kansas City to see if your doctor would do the surgery! But I don't think flying after surgery is a good idea. Especially while pregnant. Oh - and I'm having twins!
My name is Kristy and my email is kbehan@risd.edu. Please email me if you have any info you found helpful. Like - how did you find a doctor who would do the surgery?!? Did they consult with your OB?? What were the risks, did he tell you?? Thank you so much for your help.
